Distribution Modelling

This project aims to determine the distribution and density of brown hyenas in Namibia and to develop a density model that is applicable throughout the brown hyena’s range. The combination between camera trapping and GPS telemetry is the major tool used for this study, but density results obtained through this method will be compared with data obtained through other monitoring techniques.

Brown hyena paste marks have been collected in the main study area as well as other areas of the National Park to determine population size though genetic analysis. Several existing camera trap survey data sets from different parts of Namibia, data from collaborating camera trap owners of all Namibian regions and data available through the Environmental Information System (EIS) will also be analysed.
